Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground Beef (80/20 blend recommended) This juicy blend offers just the right amount of fat for a flavorful patty.
  • 2 slices Rye Bread (Seeded or seedless) The robust flavor of rye adds a distinct touch to the sandwich.
  • 2 slices Swiss Cheese This creamy cheese melts beautifully.
  • 1 large Onion (Sliced) Sweet and aromatic, caramelized onions bring irresistible flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Essential for grilling the bread.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce Adds a savory, umami kick.
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil Enhances richness and helps sauté the onions.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt Brings out the flavors.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black Pepper Adds warmth and a slight bite.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally for about 10-15 minutes until the onions are soft and golden brown.
  • Form the ground beef into two equally sized patties, about ½ inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty and season with salt and black pepper.

Cooking

  • In another skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Place the beef patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until desired doneness. During the last minute, add Worcestershire sauce and caramelized onions on top.
  • Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt.

Assembly

  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and toast one buttered side of each slice until golden brown.
  • Remove the bread, place one patty with melted cheese and onions on unbuttered sides of the bread and top with the second slice.
  • Return the sandwiches to the skillet and grill each side for about 3-4 minutes until crispy.

Serving

  • Remove from the skillet, cut the sandwich in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

Use a mix of 80/20 ground beef for flavor. You can try different cheese and onion variations. For crisp crust, a cast iron skillet works best. Serve with pickles or mustard for added flavor.
