  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (thawed) Wraps the filling to provide a crispy texture.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Sauté for 10-15 minutes until soft and caramelized.
  • Add the Italian sausage to the skillet with the onions, breaking it into small pieces. Cook for 8-10 minutes until browned and cooked through, stirring in thyme and black pepper.
  • Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into rectangles (approximately 4x6 inches).
  • Spoon the sausage and onion mixture onto one half of each pastry rectangle, fold over, and seal by crimping the edges with a fork.
  • Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the rolls.
  • Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding balsamic vinegar to the onion mixture. For a cheesier filling, mix in grated cheese before sealing the pastry. Experiment with herbs like rosemary or oregano for added aroma.
