Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef A juicy blend with some fat content for depth of flavor.
  • 1 large Sweet onion Caramelized for natural sweetness.
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Key for a perfect Patty Melt.
  • 4 slices Rye bread Adds crunch and flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter Essential for grilling the sandwich.
  • Salt To taste for seasoning.
  • Pepper Adds a touch of zing.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the large sweet onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt one tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until they are beautifully golden and caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  • While the onions are cooking, season the ground beef generously with salt and pepper. Shape it into a patty that matches the size of your bread slices and make a slight indentation in the center.

Cooking

  • In a separate pan, heat a little oil or butter over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patty for 3 to 4 minutes on one side, then flip it. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on top and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Once the patty is cooked, lay the caramelized onions on one slice of rye bread, followed by the patty with melted cheese, and then top it with another slice of bread.
  • In the skillet from the onions, melt the remaining tablespoon of unsalted butter. Carefully place the sandwich in the pan. Grill until the bread is golden and crispy, about 3 to 4 minutes. Flip the sandwich and repeat.

Serving

  • Once everything is golden brown, remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it cool for a minute before slicing diagonally. Serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

For variations, try adding sautéed mushrooms or opt for turkey or a veggie patty. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet over low heat to keep the bread crispy.
