  • 2 tbsp Butter For caramelization.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar Enhances sweetness.
  • 1 cup Beef broth For deglazing.
  • 1 tbsp Fresh thyme leaves For flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by slicing the large onions thinly.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions along with the sugar.
  • Stir occasionally, allowing the onions to caramelize slowly for about 15-20 minutes until they become golden brown and sweetly aromatic.

Deglazing

  • Once the onions are caramelized, pour in the beef broth and scrape the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon to deglaze and incorporate all the delicious bits.
  • Add fresh thyme leaves and simmer for an additional 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.

Beef Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly to combine the flavors.
  • Form the mixture into four equal-sized patties.

Cooking the Burgers

  • Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness.
  • Just before they are done, place a slice of Gruyère or Swiss cheese on each burger to let it melt.

Toasting Buns

  • While the burgers finish cooking, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a small skillet.
  • If using, add the minced garlic. Toast the hamburger buns cut-side down until they are golden and crispy.

Assembly

  • Place the cheesy patty on the bottom half of the toasted bun. Top generously with the caramelized onion mixture.
  • Place the top half of the bun over the onions, and you have a fantastic French onion soup burger ready to wow your taste buds!

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar while caramelizing the onions. If you prefer a little heat, try adding a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture. Opt for different types of cheese based on your preference – blue cheese or cheddar can make delicious alternatives.
